Avalon Europe is seeking skilled and experienced Helmsmen to join our crew and navigate our luxury river cruise ships safely and efficiently. As a Helmsman, you will be responsible for operating the ship’s steering equipment, maintaining a steady course, and avoiding obstacles to ensure the safety of both guests and crew. You will closely monitor weather conditions, water levels, and other factors that may impact navigation, while communicating effectively with the Captain and other crew members to coordinate safe and smooth operations on board.

In this role, you will assist with docking and undocking the ship as directed by the Captain, participate in safety drills and emergency procedures, and maintain accurate records of navigation activities, including logbooks and reports. Your strong understanding of navigation principles, along with your ability to use both electronic and manual navigation equipment, will be critical in ensuring the ship’s safe passage through various waterways. You will also be expected to perform additional duties as assigned by the Captain or other senior crew members, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of the ship.

To qualify for this position, you should have a high school diploma or equivalent, with vocational or technical training in marine navigation preferred. A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Helmsman or in a similar position on a river or sea vessel is required. You must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to safety. Flexibility to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays, is also essential.
