Every great journey begins with a single decision – to step into the unknown.

For I Gusti Made Beratha, that moment came more than a decade ago when he left his island home of Lombok, Indonesia and joined the world of river cruising.

Since then, he has become part of Avalon Europe’s living history – a man whose quiet dedication has shaped the comfort of countless guests and inspired generations of crew who followed.

This is his story. A story of discipline, discovery and deep pride in what it means to serve with heart.

A Journey that Began with Courage

When asked how it all began, Gusti smiles softly.

“I started joining River Advice in 2009 with a multinational crew as a Stateroom Attendant. With Avalon, I began on Avalon Luminary in 2012, then moved through Panorama, Vista, Creativity, Visionary, Artistry II, Envision and Passion. In 2025, I am working as a Housekeeper Jumper for Avalon Passion, Impression, and Expression.”

His story is one of commitment – a journey marked by professionalism and grace that quietly shaped more than a decade of life on Europe’s rivers.

The First Challenges

Like many crew members, Gusti remembers his first season as both exciting and testing.

“The hardest part of my first contract was adapting to established standards, working hours and communication,” he shares. “I was fortunate to have superiors and colleagues who were patient enough to teach me.”

In those early days, perseverance and teamwork became his foundation.

The Heart of the Ship

Housekeeping, often described by guests as “the heart of the ship,” is where Gusti finds his purpose.

“Providing the best service in accordance with company standards – with joy,” he says. “Cleanliness, tidiness and fulfilling guest requests make me proud of what I do.”

It is this quiet pride that makes his work feel not just like a profession, but a calling.

Moments of Stillness

For someone whose days are filled with motion and detail, Gusti finds peace in simplicity.

“My favourite spot is on the Sky Deck, to enjoy the view during afternoon sailing.”

It’s a small ritual that reflects his appreciation for the beauty of what surrounds him – the rivers, the rhythm, the ever-changing horizon.

Sharing Culture, Sharing Heart

Life onboard is also about connection – not just between crew and guests, but between cultures.

“I like to share about the Indonesian language, our beautiful places, food and traditional ceremonies,” Gusti explains.

Through these moments of sharing, he becomes a bridge between worlds, reminding others that cultural exchange is one of the most beautiful parts of ship life.

A Guest to Remember

For Gusti, the greatest reward comes not in words of praise, but in returning guests.

“Guests enjoy travelling with us and promise to come back again for the best service from us,” he says.

It’s in those simple exchanges that the true impact of his work is felt – service that lingers long after the voyage ends.

Growth Beyond Borders

Looking back, Gusti recognises how profoundly ship life has changed him.

“Before I worked on the ship, my world felt small – only home and the workplace,” he reflects. “After I started working on the ship, I was able to travel to many places I had never imagined before and do many things with my family. It lifted our lives economically.”

His journey is a testament to what opportunity and hard work can achieve, both professionally and personally.

Lessons in Teamwork

When asked what housekeeping has taught him most, his answer is simple and wise.

“Teamwork teaches us how to see differences as opportunities, maintain a balance of contributions and solve problems collectively to improve effectiveness and productivity.”

It’s this mindset that continues to define him – respectful, steady and always focused on the collective success of the team.

Between Seasons

When home in Indonesia, Gusti’s world slows down to family rhythms.

“I spend a lot of time with my extended family and friends, visiting some places we like.”

It’s a life of balance, – giving back to those who give him purpose.

Hopes for Tomorrow

Looking ahead, Gusti’s wish is grounded in gratitude.

“I hope I can continue doing my job in this extraordinary place and bring happiness to my family. There are many opportunities and challenges on river cruises.”

For him, the journey is ongoing – filled with purpose, discovery and quiet pride.

There is something profoundly moving about dedication expressed quietly — through clean corners, fresh linen, and the soft order that turns a cabin into a home.

For over a decade, Gusti has been part of that invisible heartbeat that keeps the Avalon experience alive. His work may begin before sunrise and end long after sunset, yet its impact is lasting — carried in every smile, every guest returning, and every young crew member who learns by his example.

This is what it means to belong to Avalon Europe, – where even the smallest details tell a story of excellence, care and grace.
