Meet the Author of this Crew story –
Viliam Kraic (22) – Night Auditor, from Slovakia
At just 22 years old, Viliam Kraic represents a rising generation of Avalon Europe crew – driven, bold and refreshingly honest. From the quiet corridors of night duty to the lively conversations that happen long after guests have gone to sleep, Viliam brings energy, heart and humour into every shift. Here, in his own words, is a glimpse into his story.
Viliam, do you remember the moment you first heard about life on board?
Yes, I do. I first heard about life on board from a close friend who worked in the cruise industry. The way they described the international environment, the teamwork and the chance to travel through Europe while working sparked something in me.
What surprised you most when you first joined Avalon Europe?
It was how quickly I felt part of a big international family. The diversity of the crew, the professionalism and how well everything worked on board impressed me.
My first ship was Avalon Envision and I still can remember how hard the beginning was, but now I’m happy I decided to continue.
Being a Night Auditor isn’t easy – how did you get used to night shifts?
It was a challenge at the beginning, especially adjusting my sleeping pattern. But over time, I found ways to manage it – creating a consistent routine, eating properly and using quiet time for self-reflection.
I’m just very, very very and again very open and extroverted, so sometimes I “suffer” from loneliness ?
What have you learned about yourself since joining Avalon?
I’ve learned how to stay calm under pressure, communicate across cultures and always stay focused. Living and working so closely with others taught me patience and discipline.
I also found one thing which I like the most: I’m not judging. Doesn’t matter who you are – I’ll always try to find a way how to talk to you or how to make you happy. That’s for sure.
What do you wish other young people knew about the job, the community and the growth it can offer?
I wish they knew how much personal and professional growth this life can offer.
What’s the most challenging part of your daily routine and how do you handle it?
The biggest challenge is staying energized during long or quiet hours.
Sometimes I go for a short break, listen to some music and come back. Music is my therapy by the way ;)
Who inspires you on board?
There are many amazing people I’ve worked with, but one manager in particular has made a big impact – Elena Zamfir.
Her leadership style is calm yet firm and she always supports career development. She believed in me from the start, and working with her is always a pleasure.
What makes Avalon Europe feel different from any other job you’ve had or heard of?
The level of care for guests – it’s truly special.
It’s not just about service. It’s about creating experiences. At least this is what I’m trying to do for them—to take home some nice memories on us.
Do you see yourself staying in this industry long-term?
Yes, I do. My dream is to grow within the industry – possibly move into fully Second Receptionist, then First…
And who knows? Guests are saying I’d fit for Cruise Director as well, so we never know ??
Imagine talking to your past self, what do you wish you had known then?
I’d tell myself that I’m about to begin one of the most life-changing chapters of my life.
Be open, stay strong, and enjoy every moment, because as I always say, we never know what can happen.
We don’t have to be here tomorrow, so I’m just trying to enjoy every moment of my life!
